The production is much as I would expect for this type of metal. Everything is cleanly recorded with all the instruments being clearly audible. The sound is nice and powerful, but without sacrificing clarity. This kind of production would certainly take the edge off of a more atmospheric doom or black metal style band, but for these guys it works really well and enables the little details in the music to be clearly heard. Like all metal this album benefits from a good set of speakers, but even using small laptop speakers the sound has a nice balance of clarity and viciousness. I’ve not heard these guys before, but apparently this is their 5th album. There is lots of good music I still need, to get but I will hopefully be investigating their older albums at some point. Although nothing revolutionary, this is stronger than a lot of recent death metal releases and well worth checking out.
Gory Blister are a Technical Death metal band from Milan Italy. I must admit my first thought was that the band name is a bit weak. However, the album itself is quite a pleasant surprise. There is some great musicianship on display throughout. Two main influences spring to mind when listening to this; later Death albums, and Heartwork era Carcass. The band are very tight and the songs are well structured and for the most part manage to twist and turn nicely without becoming totally disjointed. Some of the guitar solos are particularly well played and constructed as well, with a good mix of shredding and some very nice melodic ideas. The vocals are all growled in the usual Death Metal style, although the vocalist does manage to vary the pitch and intensity at times, which is quite a nice touch and adds a bit of variety to the songs. For a Technical Death band Gory Blister are more melodic than I was expecting and remind me more of the early Tech Death bands like Death and Atheist, instead of the more modern speed obsessed acts like Origin. Don’t get me wrong, I like both approaches, but it’s nice to hear a band that has Technical ideas that are more than just a stream of fast notes at times. There are even a few clean guitar parts that add a nice change in dynamics to a few of the songs. The production is much as I would expect for this type of metal.
