1. Thanks for taking the time to share with our readers your story, music,
and thoughts. You have been involved with Sadael in this scene for a long time
now, at least since as far back as 2004. Tell me, how did you come to sire this band and what is its focus? Where did it's name come from?
ANSWER: Good day! Well, I always wanted to play metal, since i was a violinist a long time ago, so the desire became reality when I bought a guitar and started learning how to play.
In the beginning there was a lot of ambient music, then I mostly focused on metal. Mostly on funeral doom, but now it seems that there's no funeral doom in the newest Sadael albums.
By the way,Sadael means "The Devil" in Armenian...friends called me that way, as I looked very harsh and grim
2. You play also play in Disfinite as lead guitarist and driving force behind Bokrag, right? How has it gone for you since you started with these other bands? What are your goals for their future?
ANSWER: There was Bokrag in the beginning of my death metal career... We played 2 live shows, released a cd, then I left to Russia. Bokrag was founded by me and my friend Arash Eivani helped me a lot with it. He wrote all lyrics and recorded vocals.
Actually I love death metal,it's my favoured genre, and i always wanted to have a death metal band, so it was Bokrag. Now I have Disfinite (another one-man-band), which last year released a debut album named Duality through Exalted Woe Records. Vladimir Melikyan did the vocals, and the mix is also done by him. We worked together in his band Sworn, and he is also the vocalist in Sadael's latest 2 albums, Diary Of Loss and Dreams.
I am now trying to find some time to continue Sadael and Disfinite, but working alone is not interesting, so I want to involve people to work with me.
3. You just released last year a new full-length, entitled "Dreams" [very nice monument to funeral doom metal, in this author's opinion!] What are some of the themes that drive your music?
ANSWER: Dreams is just about...dreams, love, another world that lives in our dreams. Desires that never come true... but anyway i guess funeral doom genre is leaving my music, mostly there are some death metal parts and melodic, neo-classical themes. I like that direction, but not sure which way that Sadael will go.
4. Can you explain your process when writing new material, your modus operandi of sorts? What influences do you call upon, if any?
ANSWER: Actually, I just hear the music in my mind while I'm about to sleep, mostly I forget 90% of the music I hear, and only the remaining 10% is remembered and recorded. Also, I hear such instruments that do not exist in our reality, chords that never can be played. It's too bad that it's impossible to record that music... Poets express their feelings in words, artists by drawing, composers by music. In my case music is the story of my life, happy seconds, sad moments, disappointments, lies; everything gets its place in notes. They're simple, pure, sometimes beautiful, sometimes crying, begging for help, or full of hatred and evil.
5. You have been involved in several bands throughout the years.
Are you satisfied with the progression ov your various discographies between
them? If not, what would you change?
ANSWER: I'm pretty happy to any achievement reached, no retreat, no surrender at any point. Movement is the life, we always should go ahead, never look back and try to create and improvise more, overcome technical barriers and distance. Mostly I do not have a live band, but always wanted to have live shows and tours in doom and death metal styles, both. Now searching for people from around the world to cooperate, sometimes I ask to write lyrics, sometimes to record vocals. Anyhow I want to include people in my projects, as I'm very tired of being an one-man band. From a point of view that's very comfortable. You can always do anything you want, but that's not life. You may kinda stuck in there, and I need movement, so will try to include more people in my projects always.
6. I noticed via Metallum that you are an ex-member ov Sworn. What happened that led to the band breaking up? Did you leave on good terms?
ANSWER: Yes, of course I left Sworn on good terms. Vladimir Melikyan is the founder of that band, and we are good friends. He helped me out a lot with singing in my albums and mastering them. We still cooperate. Sworn just changed it's name, and at that time I was very busy with my personal projects, so we had to break up, but we are friends with all of the members of the band.
7. You live in Russia now, right? How is the underground metal scene up there? Any good bands besides your various acts from there that I should check out?
ANSWER: I do not go the concerts in Russia mostly... There are a lot of bands here, but I still did not find a favorite for me, so can't recommend anything yet, sorry.
8. What other interests do you have that range beyond musical composition? Any hopes and ambitions for other artistic ventures that we should be on the lookout for?
ANSWER: Well, i did not understand the question correctly. If it's about my other interests, I should say that I love sports, bodybuilding (ex champion of Armenia), powerlifting (ex champion), as well as having more than 20 years of martial arts practice. Besides that, I'm interested in reading, philosophy, esoterics and history. My goal: being better tomorrow than yesterday, being wiser, stronger and kinder. Do not harm any one if it is not needed. To forgive people, and when showing them their mistakes, I try not to hurt them with a word or by acting the wrong way. This life is just a quest, we should learn not to lose... That's why we are here. And everyone should think why he/she lives ,and when the day comes, we can freely say that we did not live our lives in vain. That's my philosophy of life. Sorry for many words.
9. [Inevitable question! :D] So, I must ask: What are your thoughts on things
like religion/spirituality, politics/war, etc.?
ANSWER: I have no religion, the space is so big... I say I have no religion, but that does not mean i do not believe in god. Definitely there is something no one can explain. It's much bigger than a human's mind can understand. That's why we don't know the truth I guess. Anything is possible. I will just say, I believe in light. The light is pure, it's clean, and it has wisdom. We have enough darkness in our life, so let's choose the light.
About the politics...I hate politics, war is too bad. I hate war too.
10.Thanks for your time, Vahe! Any last words?
ANSWER: I wish you good luck, iron health, peaceful mind, and a light glance to the life! Thank you, and all the best!
