The founders of The Noctambulant aren't exactly new kids in town (which would be Jacksonhell, Fl) and probably have nothing to prove, so they just do things their own way. And on their own time. And it shows. Dreams of Rotten Silence is apparently their first EP and it already sounds like something done by a band that's been around for a decade - and is still hungry. The Noctambulant's style is easy to describe - strictly medium tempo, energetic, melodic black metal. Good sound, well placed screams. You can headbang to it. They probably do it as well. But, don't be surprised if you get mesmerized as well. You won't expect it or feel like it was going to happen, but it will happen. There's a sort of trancey, storytelling feeling to all the three songs (plus intro), and the way the riffs, solos and melodies are pre-meditated will keep you occupied, noticing the changes, following and drowning in them more and more until this - or that - adrenalin part shakes you up and makes you pay attention again. Like, what the hell just happened? Was that...? And, yes, it was. Something like that. Don't try to explain or analyze it. Just enjoy. Even the drums are an integral part of the picture although they, in theory, shouldn't be - mentioning them here because they sound horribly fake. Yet, they constitute a powerful trance-inducing machine all the better for it. Looks like Satan works in mysterious ways.
Reading various band self-descriptions could lead to all sorts of conclusions, but whatever The Noctambulant mean by "modern black metal" - don't worry. It's probably not what you'd expect and it still kicks ass. In a sort of controlled, slow burning way, but it kicks ass nonetheless.
