"canopy" is the opener and is a resplendent low drone - it's not the most complex of drones but it moves well within itself. "alone and in silence" is more expressive with some nice layers and "reflections" finishes out Altarium's contribution; it seems quite contemplative and almost perfectly sombre. i quite like these three tracks from Altarium; they go well together, they have an underlying theme to connect them, and have been nicely arranged and played well but they do end a little abruptly, but other than that some nice expressive drones.
"autunno" is a nice guitar piece with a spoken vocal; it has a slight improv or one take feel to it. "dark dream" is a nice slowly evolving guitar driven song and i like the vocal which is almost hidden in the layers giving it a more haunted, echoing feel; the tempo change is a bit awkward. "nyctophilia" closes out the split and it is almost deliciously slow enough before it turns into something else... Stillness probably fit into a selection of sub-genres but i choose not to pin them down; the three tracks don't quite sit well together, no underlying connecting theme, but shows off the range of talent of stillness perfectly.
overall this is an enjoyable release. a little something for droners and a little something for doomers and while the mix of bands is a little weird i don't mind it (seen as i like both). here you get three solid songs from both bands; if you want emotive drones listen to Altarium if you want something slow and a little angry listen to Stillness - should suit most moods.
