experimental black metal solo project, the sole member relying on nothing more than
a 4-string bass and his vocal chords to create an almost trance-like, psychedelic
style ov music. It shows a striking resemblance to some ov the earlier works ov
Sunn O))), especially the overlapping layers ov distorted and clean bass. Though,
as can be expected, 0 seeks to remind its listeners that, while a new take on
the subject, it is still inherently black metal at its core.
No track comes forth clearer an example ov this than "I, the River". It is still
principly clean bass riffing with ritualized distortion layered in intervals, but
it is the vox that draws the most attention. They're harsh, distorted, yet not
shrieked, almost Varg-like in his later years before he turned Burzum into an entirely
ambient band.
All in all, this album was a good listen. Relatively short in length, the tracks are
interesting and varied enough that I kept finding myself drifting off into the void
before realizing two or three tracks had passed in my absence. Recommended if you're
into psychedelic and ritualized black metal such as Nachtmystium, or doom / drone
bands such as Sunn O))).
